Exchange semester in Linköping

Exchange student, artificial intelligence track
company
Linköping University (LiU)
location
Linköping, Sweden

Context

For the final year of my engineering degree, I studied at Linköping University, in Sweden, one of the country's major technical universities. The aim: add a specialisation in artificial intelligence to my embedded systems background, and learn to work in another university system, entirely in English.

Courses

The five courses taken in Linköping around artificial intelligence: computer vision, data mining, autonomous vehicles, the Internet of Things and scientific writing.

Computer vision. How a machine goes from an image to an understanding of the scene: image processing, feature extraction, object detection and recognition.

Data mining. Extracting structure and models from large amounts of data: classification, clustering, association rules.

Autonomous vehicles. The full chain of a self-driving vehicle: perceiving its surroundings, locating itself, planning a path and following it.

Internet of Things. From connected sensors to the cloud: communication protocols, power constraints, the architecture of distributed systems.

Scientific report writing. Structuring, arguing and presenting technical results in English, as in a publication.

What stayed with me

This semester gave a concrete direction to what came next. A few months later, my final internship was about deep-learning object detection in infrared images, for cars: computer vision applied to vehicles, right where these courses meet embedded systems.
